The ALTRES family of companies is a second-generation, family-owned business and Hawaii’s largest human resources organization. Founded in Honolulu in 1969, ALTRES has been delivering innovative employment solutions to Hawaii businesses for more than 40 years.
With corporate headquarters in Honolulu, the company consists of two distinct business lines. simplicityHR by ALTRES is the state’s most experienced and only nationally award-winning provider of HR administration services, while ALTRES Staffing is Hawaii’s largest employment services company (see altres.com). Collectively, ALTRES employs 145 staff in five office locations.
Serving as the human resources “back office” for more than 800 local businesses, simplicityHR by ALTRES provides employment administration, payroll processing, workers’ compensation, risk management, health care plans and employee benefits plans covering thousands of employees statewide.

Bill Guss opens a labor services company to provide a flexible workforce to Oahu shipyards. From his office lanai in Waikiki, he would raise a blue flag just after sunrise—a sign to surfers on dawn patrol that there was work available that day. |
| 1971 |
The East Coast corporate headquarters of Xerox, IBM and Motorola find it difficult to provide payroll and HR support to their Hawaii-based employees 5,000 miles away. ALTRES fills a need and pioneers the outsourcing of HR administration services in Hawaii. |
| 1981 |
ALTRES establishes Hawaii's first professional employer organization (PEO) and becomes a national leader in the PEO industry, which provides HR administration and support services to both commercial and nonprofit clients. |
| 1988 |
The ALTRES companies expand from Hawaii to the mainland, opening up and buying businesses in California, Arizona and Utah. |
| 2000 |
ProEmp Journal names ALTRES the #1 PEO in America. |
| 2003 |
After 15 years of continuous expansion and growth outside of Hawaii, ALTRES decides to focus exclusively on serving the Hawaii business community once again. |

CEO Barron Guss is named the NFIB Small Business Champion of the Year for Hawaii by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). |
| 2009 |
ALTRES celebrates its 40th anniversary and for the 5th consecutive year, ALTRES is ranked one of Hawaii's Best Places to Work.
ALTRES launches simplicityHR and becomes the first provider in the nation to provide multiple tiers of HR administration services.
ALTRES is named "Innovative Company of the Year" by Pacific Business News.

ALTRES releases HR Symphony™, a fully-integrated, single-login, human resources information system (HRIS) and web portal. |
| 2012 |
ALTRES merges with KilaKila Employer Services, the leading PEO on Maui. The combined organization now provides outsourced payroll and HR services to more than 800 client companies and their 8,000 employees statewide. |
